IGCSE ESL (English as Second Language)
1- Why choose Cambridge IGCSE ESL?
Cambridge IGCSE ESL offers learners the opportunity to gain lifelong skills and knowledge including:
- Better communicative ability in English
- Improved ability to understand English in a range of everyday situations and in a variety of social registers and styles
- Greater awareness of the nature of language and language-learning skills
- Wider international perspective.
2- Summary of Aims:
Some of the aims of the syllabus are:
- Develop learners' ability to use English effectively for the purpose of practical communication
- Form a solid foundation for the skills required for further study or employment using English as the medium
- Develop learners' awareness of the nature of language and language-learning skills
- Promote learners' personal development.
3- Assessment and Exam Format:
Cambridge IGCSE ESL candidates take three components:
- Reading and writing (Component 1 or Component 2) (70% of total mark)
- Listening (Component 3 or Component 4) (30% of total mark)
- Speaking component (Component 5 or Component 6). (separately endorsed)
Candidates who study the Core curriculum take Components 1 and 3, and candidates who study the Extended curriculum take Components 2 and 4. It is not possible for candidates to combine Component 1 with Component 4 or Component 2 with Component 3.
