Michael Phelps made it official on Monday, announcing on Today that he is packing away his Speedos and saying goodbye to the world of competitive swimming.

迈克尔·菲尔普斯在周一正式宣布打包好了三角泳裤，跟游泳竞赛世界说拜拜了。

'Done, done, done - and this time I mean it,' Phelps told host Matt Lauer.

“够了够了，真的够了——这一次我是说真的，”菲尔普斯对主持人马特·劳尔说道。

'I wanted to come back and finish my career how I wanted and this was the cherry on top of the cake.'

“我想回家继续我想做的事业——做做小蛋糕。”

If there was a record for breaking records, Michael Phelps would doubtless don his goggles and cap to swim for it.

But the "Baltimore Bullet" couldn't add to his 23 Olympic gold medals in the 100-meter butterfly last Friday as he was beaten by outsider Joseph Schooling.

Schooling became the first Singaporean athlete to win a Games gold -- and did so in an Olympic record time of 50.39 seconds.

Phelps completed the third leg of the race and Team USA finished with an overall time of 3:27.95, an Olympic record.

The race concludes the unprecedented Olympic career of Phelps, who will leave Rio de Janeiro with a gold medal count of 23, a long list of world records.

While Phelps is adamant that these are his last games, it’s worth noting he’s announced his “retirement” once before, at the end of the 2012 Olympics in London.

Last Friday, teammate Ryan Lochte said he wouldn’t write Phelps off for the 2020 games just yet.

Reflecting on his career ahead of the Rio Games in an interview, Phelps says he didn’t set out intending to upstage legendary swimmers that came before him, like Mark Spitz. He just wanted to be the best Michael Phelps possible.
