To have deep pockets

My company had a good year. They've got deep pockets so we always have a great New Year party. It's alright. Choose what you want off the menu. My dad's paying, and he's got deep pockets. You'll need deep pockets if you want to buy a controlling stake in the company.

I'll pay for all our tickets today but I don't want to be out of pocket so can you pay me back by the end of the week? The pay for the job didn't cover all my food, travel and accommodation expenses so I ended up out of pocket.

Pay through the nose for something

We went on vacation during the school holidays. Of course we had to pay through the nose for our tickets as they always put the prices up then.If you order a good bottle of wine in a restaurant you really pay through the nose for it.Some people don’t mind paying through the nose for brands they like.

请注意另一个可以用来表示“花一大笔钱”的说法是 an arm and a leg “一只胳膊和一条腿”,有时我们也说 pay an arm and a leg for something。

Fuel is so expensive these days. It costs an arm and a leg to fill up the car.Never order water in a restaurant; it costs an arm and a leg.

To throw money at (a problem)
所谓向问题投掷金钱  to throw money at (a problem) 意思就是为解决问题花大笔钱。

They’ve tried throwing money at the problem without any luck. Perhaps they should actually think more carefully about the cause. The university has thrown money at the sports department without much success. They need to invest in people as well as equipment.

请注意To throw good money after bad

You’re throwing good money after bad trying to repair your car. It’s not worth it. It’ll just break down again.I thought it was a good investment but it turns out I was just throwing good money after bad. The company still went bust and I lost everything.

Splash out 挥霍

I was feeling down, so I splashed out on a new computer and then felt great. The shops were full of people splashing out after pay day.I fancy sushi. Let's splash out and go to that new restaurant down the road. It's expensive but the food looks delicious.

Bradley Wiggins made a splash by winning the Tour de France. Nobody had heard of him and a week later he started the Olympic Opening Ceremony.

Dirt cheap

At this time of year fruit is dirt cheap.Compared to London, properties in some parts of the country are dirt cheap - but salaries are also much lower in those regions. If you don’t mind last season’s designs you can pick up some dirt cheap clothes in the sales.

The tabloids love digging up dirt on celebrities. The private investigator was hired to dig up dirt on the politician with the aim of blackmailing him into supporting the controversial policy.

A nest egg

I want to build up a nest egg for my retirement so I always save whatever I can every month.Without our nest egg I don't know how we would have been able to afford to get the roof fixed.I've got some money set aside as a nest egg, in case of emergency.

Don't invest all your money in one company. It's never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket. What would you do if the company crashed?I get a lot of work form this company, but I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket so I'm taking time off to look for work elsewhere.
